N Biren Singh: News
Nongthombam Biren Singh is an ex-footballer, former journalist, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) politician, and the Chief Minister of Manipur as of 2021. As part of the Border Security Force’s (BSF) football team, Singh played in various tournaments. After some years of service, he resigned and took up journalism as a profession. Singh founded and edited the vernacular newspaper ‘Naharolgi Thoudang’ between 1992 and 2001. The next year, he entered politics by joining the Democratic Revolutionary Peoples Party (DRPP). He successfully contested the 2002 Manipur Assembly elections from the Heingang constituency. In 2003, he left DRPP to join the Indian National Congress (INC) and later served as the Minister of State for Vigilance and Forest & Environment in the state government. Singh was re-elected in the 2007 elections from Heingang. This time, he served as the Minister of Irrigation & Flood Control, Consumer Affairs & Public Distribution, and Sports & Youth Affairs. Singh again retained his seat in the 2012 polls but resigned from both the INC and the state Assembly in 2016. He joined the BJP and led the party to victory in the 2017 Manipur elections. He was elected for the fourth time from Heingang and was sworn in as the Chief Minister.
